George Tom Harsley was born at Cotehouses in 1870, the son of Robert (a farmer) and Ashmal (nee Whittingham) who had married in 1854.  He married Frances Harriet Sowerby of Messingham in 1894 and they set up home in her village.  Their first child John was born followed by Blanche and Dorothy.

Around 1900 George moved his young family to Easton near Grantham and worked as a shepherd.  By 1921 the family were living in Scotter where he had become a foreman.

George died in March 1969 aged 98 and is buried in Scotter Cemetery alongside his wife who pre-deceased him by 5 years.
