Son of Joseph Thomas ('Joe', a farm foreman from Goxhill) and Ann ('Annie'; nee Clare from Padgate near Warrington) 

Family moved to Redbourne, then Northorpe Grange and later to Woodhouse Cottage, Scotter  

Enlisted in September 1914

At the Somme, in July1916 wounded 'in the early days of the big push' and hospitalised in England

Married Blanche Ellen Harsley on 27th June 1921 at St. Peters Church

Lived on South Street, Scotter

Normal sight then one day at work he went permanently blind from the effects of wartime

  'shrapnel behind the eyes'

Wife died in 1943 and he later went to live with their daughter at Blyth, Nottinghamshire

Moved back and resided at Lea Road, Gainsborough

Died 4th April 1962 aged 68 at St. George's Hospital, Lincoln

Buried next to his wife in Scotter Cemetery

Born 23rd March 1887 at Deepdale, near Barton on Humber

Son of William (an agricultural labourer from Cabourne near Caistor) and Mary Jane (nee Pike of Worlaby)

Mother died in 1893

In 1911 worked for John Ireland at Molescroft Grange farm near Beverley

Enlisted in 1915

Arrived in France on 1st June 1915

On demobilisation posted to Class Z Reserve - a civilian obliged to return to the Army if called upon

Married Daisy Stark in 1920 in the Grimsby district

The next year their son James D. was born in the Glanford Brigg district

Died in 1978 aged 91 in the Scunthorpe registration district

 

SIDNEY CABLE  (connection to Scotter not known)

Lance Corporal, Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment

Born June 1890 in Grimsby

Son of John (a fisherman from Bradwell, Essex) and Eliza Ann (nee Capes of Grimsby)

When he was just 4 years old his father died then his mother died within the next six months

With his older sister Dorothy moved to live with the family of his grandmother Elizabeth Capes and her 2nd husband William Wilspear Smith at 41 Hainton Avenue, Great Grimsby

 

Enlisted 12th April 1915 at Retford

Described as 5 feet 5 and a half inches tall

Promoted to Lance Corporal on 27th August 1915 and to Acting Corporal

On 13th December 1916 joined the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment on 19th December 1917  and sent to France

Suffered gas poisoning

Posted back to England on 8th November 1918

Discharged 22nd February 1919
