A Scotter woman was a nurse in the French Red Cross. (Her name might have been wrongly transcribed when the memorial was refurbished in the 1980s)

Born in the summer of 1881 and baptised at St. Peter’s Church
Daughter of Robert (a farmer from Hatfield Woodhouse) and Charlotte (nee Dauber of Scotter)
Family resided on Becks Lane
As a child she moved with her family to live at Goosemoor
Mother died in 1900
The 1901 census shows her as her father’s housekeeper
Father died in 1903
Became a Nursing Sister at Chester General Infirmary
Arrived in France in July 1915
Married William Day (a farmer) on 28th February 1917 at St. Peter’s Church
On 2nd March 1917 the ‘Gainsborough News’ reported:-
‘Nurse Emma Morris, daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Robert Morris of South Hill Farm, on Wednesday married William Day, son of the late Mr. & Mrs. William Day of Church Farm. The bride has put in some two years of heroic work among our French allies on the Western Front’
Their children were William (1918-1970 ; a pattern maker who lived at 3 Love Lane, Gainsborough), Emily (1919-1937) and Robert (1921-1922)
Died on 5th January 1934 aged 52
Buried alongside her husband, close to their oldest children in Scotter Cemetery
